Artist Gail Etheredge
Gail Etheredge

C64G: Can you take us back to the roots of your art journey? What sparked your passion for creating, and what inspired you to dive into the world of art?

Gail: I didn't start painting until later in life, I had a light bulb moment when my sister-in-law said she had joined an art class, I realised I wanted to do that, so I did! From then on, I was hooked.

C64G: An artist's style usually evolves over time. How would you describe your journey? Are there specific artists, genres, tools, medium or cultural influences that are currently shaping your creative identity? How have you evolved through your process?

Gail: Because I started late, I have had a lot of experimentation to evolve as a painter. I have done some workshops and classes but am mainly self-taught. I realise I like variety, so I continue to work in acrylics, oils, mixed media and collage in a variety of subjects, but mainly landscapes and abstracts.

C64G: Every artist encounters hurdles in their practice. Could you share a specific challenge you've faced and how you're tackling it? Any lessons learned from these artistic adventures?

Gail: I am challenged constantly by my ability to market myself. Not being great with technology! I need to learn more marketing skills. Another challenge is because I experiment a lot of my work can be very different, lately I have been working in a series which leads to a more cohesive body of work.

C64G: What exciting projects or opportunities are on your horizon? Any exhibitions or initiatives you're eager to dive into or collaborations that have enriched your artistic growth as we venture into 2024? How do you hope your work will resonate with the viewer?

Gail: I continue to be part of the Northern Illawarra Art Trail (NIAT) which is held in April and November each year. I am also a member of the Illawarra Association of the Visual Arts (IAVA), which presents varied opportunities to exhibit. Recently, I have exhibited in Wollongong Library, Wollongong Art Gallery, the Village Practice in Woonona and with Circa 64 Gallery at Clifton School of Arts.

C64G: Building a sense of community and collaboration is essential. How important is this to you as an artist?

Gail: I continue to paint weekly in a group called Red Point Art led by Brett Masters. Now I am also part of Circa 64 Gallery, IAVA and NIAT. I have enjoyed meeting many different artists through these groups.

C64G: If you could pass on some wisdom to emerging artists, what advice would you offer? Any insights you've gained along the way that you wished you knew when starting your artistic journey?

Gail: Mainly, just paint what you feel like and continue to experiment to grow as an artist. I now wish I had started earlier as I had a lot of catching up to do!
